What is RFID?
Radio Frequency Identification or RFID is a generic term for technologies that use radio waves to automatically identify people or objects. The most common is to store a serial number that identifies on a microchip that is attached to an antenna (the chip and the antenna together are called an RFID transponder or an RFID tag). The antenna enables the chip to transmit the information to a reader. The reader converts the radio waves reflected back from the RFID tag into digital information.

How does an RFID System work?
An RFID system consists of a tag, which is made up of a microchip with an antenna, and an interrogator or reader with an antenna. The reader sends out waves. The tag antenna is tuned to receive these waves. A passive RFID tag draws power from the field created by the reader and uses it to power the microchip’s circuits. The chip then modulates the waves and the tag sends back to the reader and the reader converts the new waves into digital data.
The Notch Card should be carried in the "strike zone", which is located anywhere between your shoulders and knees. The Notch Card does not have to be removed to be read by the sensor.
The card should not be placed in the same pocket as your cell phone, iPod, or other electronic devices, near any aluminum gum wrappers or near another Notch Card. These may interfere with the transmission of the data and require you to move your card.
Is it okay if I punch a hole in my Notch Card?
No. Holes or other physical alterations should not be made to RFID cards. The card has an antenna that surrounds the RFID tag. Any damage to the surrounding antenna will render the card inactive and must be replaced at a replacement fee.
What information is stored on the Notch Card?
The RFID tag in the card contains a randomly generated number associated to your guest profile in our system. No personal information is stored on the card.
What if I lost my Notch Card?
Please contact our Ski & Ride Department or Guest Service Desk to report the lost, stolen or damaged card. A replacement card can be purchased at Guest Services, Ski & Ride, or any ticket booth location. A valid ID may be required for verification.
Will my Notch Card still be good if it goes through the wash?
Maybe. The Notch Card is a durable plastic card designed to withstand normal use. However, running them through a wash and dry cycle may damage and inactivate the card. Heat, in particular, can be damaging to your card.
If your Notch Card is damaged, a replacement fee will be charged.
Can I transfer my Notch Card to a friend or family member?
No. The Notch Card is associated to a unique person and therefore non-transferrable.
Is a Notch Card required for complimentary lift tickets or lift tickets purchased outside of Smuggs at websites such as Liftopia?
Yes, the Notch Card is required for all lift tickets or tickets that include a lift ticket regardless of where they are purchased. If you already have a Notch Card, we can simply load the ticket onto your card at one of our ticket booths or at the Ski & Ride desk.
