VSAA Statement
Ski Vermont stands in solidarity with all Black people on the issue of racial equality and civil rights. Though skiing and snowboarding face challenges regarding diversity of participation and inclusivity, our organization has made one of its priorities the process of recognizing, understanding, and addressing factors that limit access to and enjoyment of our sport for everyone. VSAA urges skiers and riders to educate themselves on ways to help bring about the end of racism and prejudice, not only within our sport and its culture, but everywhere. We encourage you to listen, empathize, reflect, and take action – not only for the sake of those victimized by centuries of inequality and oppression, but for the betterment of our society and humankind as a whole.
A statement from Smugglers’ Owner and Managing Director, Bill Stritzler
Dear Smugglers’,
As a member of the Board of Directors of the Vermont Ski Area Association, I am proud to have participated in the development of the following statement. I am expressing Smugglers’ unqualified support of both the words and intent of the VSAA Statement. In addition, Smugglers’ has formed an internal racial equity support team with the following goals:
- Identify and eliminate all racial inequities or instances of white privilege in Smugglers’ practices and policies.
- Identify and engage outside resources to help guide change at Smugglers’ as needed.
- Develop and implement a Smugglers’ training program to assist employees in understanding racial equity issues and modify behaviors as appropriate.
- Find a path to impacting Smugglers’ outside community understanding and follow-up action on the same issues.
