Extreme Challenge

Tomorrow, March 4th, the Smugglers’ Notch Ski and Snowboard Club hosts this exciting event – an opportunity for junior and adult freeskiers and riders to show their big mountain skiing on the most difficult terrain the East has to offer. Spectators are not allowed on the trail but will be treated to an amazing birds-eye view from Madonna I lift.

We have 54 skiable trails and 38 lift-accessible trails open tomorrow. The Sterling Lift will be closed Thursday, March 4th and Friday, March 5th for a mechanical repair. If you park in Parking Lot 1 you can ski or ride back to your vehicle by taking Shuttle, Crossover, Treasure Run, Lower Exhibition, and the Practice Slope.

Tomorrow we plan to have 5 lifts operating; Madonna I, Madonna II, Village, Mogul Mouse’s Magic, and Sir Henry’s Glider. 32 trails will be groomed for tomorrow including Snow Snake and Shuttle for a grand total of 128 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Surface conditions are packed powder and machine groomed with base depths of 16 to 50 inches. We received 6 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours, 11 inches in the past 5 days, and 184 inches this season so far. Currently, it is snowing and 21 degrees at the summit of Sterling. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for sunny skies early with increasing clouds and a chance of light snow later in the afternoon, breezy, and a high of 18 degrees. Bundle up and enjoy the wonderful conditions.

Sterling Mountain will be open to uphill traffic tomorrow during the day. Please stay off of Treasure Run, Lower Rumrunner, Crossover, and Lower Exhibition when ascending due to downhill traffic.

Spring conditions

Upper FIS

It was another beautiful day here at Smuggs.  The clouds were clinging to the summits of Madonna and Sterling, but everywhere else was partly sunny.  The warm temperatures made for some great spring conditions.  The soft moguls on Upper FIS were a blast! The skier’s right hand side had been groomed the night before last, so the bumps were smaller on that side. The skier’s left hand side is another story with nice good size moguls. A skier commented to me as they skied by, “I am so glad that they left Upper FIS bumped up!”

We are 100 percent open! Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts

operating and all 78 trails open. Robin’s Run is open from the work road down to Freefall. Freefall is open from the traverse on Upper FIS.  20 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Upper Chilcoot, Crossover, and Garden Path for a grand total of 87 acres of freshly groomed terrain.

Today we have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating. We have 34 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. All 34 trails have been groomed for today, that’s a grand total of 145 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Connie with her class on Wanderer

I would like you to meet Connie Douthwaite. Connie is a member of the Snow Sport University here at Smugglers’ Notch. She is a ski instructor who works with 3 to 6 year old children. The neat thing is that 13 years ago Connie was a 6 year old child taking ski lessons here at Smugglers’ Notch. Connie told me that her instructor back then was Larry Arnold who still works here at Smugglers’ Notch as a ski instructor. It is wonderful to see someone who learned to ski here 13 years ago is now teaching the next generation!

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating. We now have 36 trails open with terrain for  all ability levels. Tonight we plan to resume snowmaking on Upper Rumrunner, Crossover, Treasure Run, Lower Exhibition, and the Practice Slope. All 36 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, that’s 145 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for light snow and sleet a dusting of accumulation with a chance of mix later in the day and temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees. Tomorrow we plan to have the Log Jam, Birch Run, and Zone Terrain Park all open.
